Black Canyon Lake Summer Fishing Report

Black Canyon Lake is almost full, the boat ramp is accessible and the fishing is fair.

Green and yellow power bait seems to be working well for most anglers, on shore or in a boat. You can also try, salmon eggs, spinners, or wooly buggers.

For best results: Get out on the water at first light. Troll with a cowbell and a worm on the hook.

Fishing at Black Canyon Lake

Black Canyon Lake is full and spilling and the fishing is good with reports of anglers catching their limits.

The lake was stocked with decent sized rainbow trout around 2 pounds. Some anglers are pulling in 12 – 19 inch rainbows.

Try worms, salmon eggs, and power bait. For lures, use spinners such as super dupers, z-rays, and spoons. For fly fishing try peacock ladies, wooly worms, and wooly buggers.

For best results try deep slow trolling with a copper KastMaster or yellow Crickhopper.

There are also illegally stocked largemouth bass in the lake.

Black Canyon Lake Fishing Report

Black Canyon Lake is a small quiet trout lake perfectly situated at the end of Forest Road 300, off highway 260 between Payson and Herber.

Black Canyon Lake is a favorite trout fishing lake. It’s stocked heavily each spring and also offers services for physically challenged anglers.

Fall Fishing at Black Canyon Lake

Black Canyon lake is down about 6 feet making the boat ramp very low, so use caution.

Fishing is fair with the water temp at 77 degrees.

Try using worms, meal worms, salmon eggs, Power Bait, and lured such as spinners, and crank baits.

Shoot for the rocky area for bass and sunfish.

Woods Canyon Lake Loop

Woods Canyon Lake Loop includes 7 lakes over a 58 mile scenic drive along the Mogollon Rim. Take Forest Road 300 to Forest Road 115 and Ohaco Lookout. From there, take Forest Road 56 to the Forest Road 225 junction and proceed on 225 to Forest Road 34, then Forest Road 100. Turn left to Forest Road 169, then right to Forest Road 300 again. This route provides several scenic vistas to enjoy.

The 7 lakes include:

  • Woods Canyon Lake
  • Willow Springs Lake
  • Black Canyon Lake
  • Bear Canyon Lake
  • Chevelon Lake
  • Knoll Lake
  • Blue Ridge Reservoir

With these 7 lakes along Woods Canyon Loop you can enjoy hiking, camping, fishing, wildlife viewing and more.

Sport fishing is a popular activity at any one of these lakes. Several species of fish are available including, rainbow, brook and brown trout as well as largemouth, small mouth and striped bass.
